Overcoming Potential’s Number One Adversary: Fear

Updated: Feb 4

I've never met a person who doesn’t have some type of dream, hope or desire. Everyone has those. The problem is we allow fear to block them. Why is that? I believe you start to notice fear when you begin to reach for those lofty things that you care about. You won’t notice fear if you remain stagnant. Push the limits and fear becomes an adversary.

Fear is a powerful emotion that can significantly impact our ability to reach our potential. Research has shown that fear often inhibits actions within the context of our goal attainment (ML Ray, WL Wilkie - Journal of Marketing, 1970). Fear often becomes a barrier when it limits our experiences and hinders our capacity to take risks that could lead to growth and success.

How Fear Blocks Potential

In the pursuit of potential, fear primarily acts as a deterrent to exploring new opportunities and embracing change. The amygdala, a region of the brain involved in fear responses, plays a role in conditioning us to avoid perceived threats. This can lead to associative long-term potentiation in the amygdala after fear conditioning, creating lasting fear responses that can be challenging to overcome (MT Rogan, UV Stäubli, JE LeDoux - Nature, 1997).

Moreover, fear can influence our preferences and decision-making processes, particularly when it comes to avoidance goals. This is a big one and a common one among many people. The anticipation of fear can lead individuals to choose options that minimize the potential for failure or discomfort, rather than those that maximize the potential for success and fulfillment (M Tamir, BQ Ford - Emotion, 2009).

Practices to Overcome Fear and Attain Goals

Despite the challenges posed by fear, there are effective strategies to overcome it and progress towards achieving our goals:

Embrace Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach that encourages individuals to accept their reactions and be present in the moment without unnecessary defense. By committing to actions that align with values and goals, despite the presence of fear, one can break the cycle of avoidance and embrace a more fulfilling life (R Harris - 2011). Mindfulness exercises can help support your ACT practice by grounding you in the present and helping eliminate thoughts of fears that reside in the future.

Implement Learning Strategies

Engaging in meaningful activities and implementing learning strategies can help to overcome fears and anxiety. By focusing on the process and the enjoyment of learning, rather than the fear of potential failure, individuals can enhance their confidence and reduce anxiety (RA Buitrago Tinjacá, R Ayala Contreras - Profile Issues in Teachers' Professional Development, 2008).

Monitor Goal Progress

Monitoring one's progress towards goals has been shown to have a positive impact on goal attainment. Regularly tracking progress helps maintain focus, adjust strategies, and persist in the face of obstacles, including fear (B Harkin, TL Webb, BPI Chang, A Prestwich - Psychological Bulletin, 2016).

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset, which involves embracing challenges and viewing failures as opportunities to learn and improve, can transform the way we approach fear. Rather than avoiding situations that make us anxious, a growth mindset encourages us to engage with them as a means of personal development.

In conclusion, fear is a complex emotion that can greatly limit our potential. By understanding the mechanisms of fear and implementing strategies to overcome its limiting effects, we can unlock our full potential and achieve our dreams and goals. The journey to overcoming fear is ongoing, but with persistence and the right approach, it can lead to a life of greater achievement and fulfillment.
